Biblical “HISTORICAL NARRATIVE” Books

• Joshua – Story of conquest and fulfillment for the people of God, Israel.
• Judges – Depicts the life of Israel in the promised land.
• Ruth – Moabite woman who commits herself to the Israelite people by an oath to her mother-in-law Naomi and becomes the great-grandmother of King David.
• 1 & 2 Samuel – Relates God’s establishment of a political system in Israel headed by a human king.
• 1 & 2 Kings – Written “to record history but, more important, to teach the lessons of history.”
• 1 & 2 Chronicles – Written after the exile to help those returning to Israel understand how to worship God. 
• Ezra – Recounts Israel’s final years of exile in Babylon, including accounts of two returning groups as they are restored to their homeland after 70 years in captivity. 
• Nehemiah – First-person memoir, concerning the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. (The prophet Malachi was a contemporary of Nehemiah.)
• Esther – Although the book of Esther appears after Nehemiah in the canon, the events in Esther occurred in the time period between Ezra 6 and 7, between the first and second returns of the people to Israel.
